“Our biggest asset”: The Aware Enterprise Constitution positive aspects momentum when the Cooley’s Metropolis workplace indicators up

Cooley’s London office is the latest to join the Mindful Business Charter as mental health and wellbeing are more central than ever to law firms.

The charter was launched in 2018 and drafted by banking giant Barclays, along with Pinsent Masons and Addleshaw Goddard, to tackle workplace practices that contribute to stress and poor mental health among lawyers. It encourages people to think about being clear in emails about when they need a response when sent outside of business hours, rather than expecting people on annual vacation to be on call.

Cooley joins a cohort of law firms that have identified this mental health initiative as a business priority. In addition to the founding members, Allen & Overy, Ashurst, Baker McKenzie, BCLP, Burness Paull, Capsticks, Clifford Chance, CMS, DAC Beachcroft, Dentons, DLA Piper, DWF, Eversheds Sutherland, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Herbert Smith Freehills are other signatories, HFW, Hogan Lovells, Irwin Mitchell, Linklaters, Matheson, Michelmores, Mills and Reeve, Morton Fraser, Norton Rose Fulbright, Osborne Clarke, Paul Hastings, RPC, Shoosmiths, Simmons and Simmons, Knappe Patton Boggs, TLT, Travers Smith, Ward Hadaway, Weightmans and Womble Bond Dickinson.

The UK mental health charity Mind, the City Mental Health Alliance, the International Bar Association, the Bar Associations of England and Wales and Scotland, LawCare and the Solicitors Regulation Authority support the initiative.

The four main pillars of the charter are: openness and respect; intelligent meetings and emails; Respect rest periods; and mindful delegation.

In 2018, Cooley joined the opening class of the American Bar Association’s Wellness Pledge, signing the implementation of a seven-point plan to transform the legal profession landscape through education, politics, and culture.
